CHARACTER INFO Character Name: The Disciple Series: Homestuck Canon Point: A short time before the Signless is captured. History Link:Link. To elaborate on what’s available at the wiki since it’s rather sparse: The Disciple’s story is bound up with that of all the other Sgrub players – when the first round of players decided to restart their game for better odds of winning, she was one of those whose roles were flipped from being the players to becoming the new round of players’ ancestors.
Made through ectobiology by Karkat and sent to the past on a meteor along with the other ancestors, the Disciple would have had a normal enough start in life for a grub in Alternia of those times. A greenblood’s life wouldn’t have been as hard as that of someone lower-blooded, but a troll’s life in general was a difficult and dangerous thing. Like her descendant she most likely learned how to hunt early on from her lusus, and while little else is known about the Disciple’s life before she fell in with the Signless, it is likely that for her own safety she grew to prefer solitude to the danger and cruelties that were part of everyday life when living amongst other trolls. This would mean that unlike her descendant, Disciple would have been slow to trust and quick to shy away from company.
All that changed for her the day she met the one called the Signless. She was so taken with his message she became one of his most devoted followers and faithfully listening to and recording his every sermon. Eventually their feelings for each other developed into a love that transcended the quadrants themselves, and she followed Signless as he spread his message across Alternia, up until when the highbloods captured him. (I’ll be taking her from shortly before this point.)
Personality:
The Disciple was heavily influenced by the time and place she grew up in. Fighting for survival on a daily basis meant that as a wiggler she couldn’t afford the easy trust and naivety evident in her descendant – but that’s not to say similar traits weren’t present, simply that she wasn’t allowed the luxury of them for a long time. Being a huntress lent a feral edge to her nature, making her quick to shy away from others and slow to extend the hand of trust, let alone friendship. She used to believe that this made her stronger, and in a way it did, but at the same time it meant she was simply getting by and surviving rather than living, rather than reaching for who she could really be.
Things changed for her the night she first sat down to listen to a signless troll stand up and speak of his visions to a crowd. In the end, that she so fully welcomed Signless’ teachings speaks a great deal of her true character. Caring for everyone regardless of blood colour, striving for the kind of trust that was not only impossible but nigh on suicidal in a society like Alternia’s, forgiving the cruelties done to them – and more than that, believing in his visions and dreams of another Alternia, a different a peaceful Alternia – were all difficult things for a troll who’d grown up seeing what trolls were capable of doing to each other. Disciple, however, believed in it all so fervently as to not only decide to follow him for the rest of his life, but to faithfully record everything he said and spend the rest of her life doing whatever she could to make sure his message did not die with him.
Her time living with the Signless didn’t only affect her beliefs, however. As unknown as the concept was to trolls, he and the Psiioniic and the Dolorosa gave her a family, nurtured her, gave her a chance to grow up and mature into a troll not moulded solely by fear and her survival instinct. Her more playful and sometimes even mischievous nature was given a chance to make itself known, and while she’d never be as carefree as her descendant she certainly didn’t remain the nearly-wild huntress who’d first listened to Signless’ sermons. She could finally allow herself to care, to let the gentler parts of her nature out.
This is not to say it always came easily to her. Her wilder nature may be subdued but it’s still definitely there, and at times she can be quick to anger, having a hot-flaring temper especially when something she cares for is threatened. It leaves her liable to making rash decisions, to not thinking things though, and inevitably to being disappointed in herself afterwards for not maintaining a more level head. But part of her yearns to be intrinsically optimistic and while this part sets her up for harsher falls when things go wrong, it also helps her to overcome difficulties by always looking ahead to a possibly brighter future.
Her newfound friends and lover also inspired a fierce loyalty in her – she believed in everything that the Signless preached, but that didn’t mean she’d allow anything or anyone to hurt those she cared about if she could help it. Caring, however, did also open her up to being hurt, made her vulnerable in a way, and while her belief in Signless meant she tried to make herself see that as a good thing, she could never quite quash the fear of losing him, of not being strong enough and fast enough to protect everything they’d worked so hard for. She could still be wary of trusting others but over time it came easier to her, and once her hand was offered in friendship it wasn’t easily snatched away again.
Although I’m taking her from before Signless’ execution, it’s worth mentioning that her loyalty lived on even when her loved ones were all taken from her, though she lost nearly everything else. She’d been robbed of the chance to continue protecting them, so instead she did the one thing left to her - she dedicated her life to making sure what they worked for wouldn’t be forgotten.
